Collaborates with other inter-professional colleagues, including physicians, to plan, implement and evaluate care. Demonstrates competency and practices within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge and utilizes appropriate age and population specific standards as designated in their assigned clinical setting. Cares for patients in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up as patients move along the continuum of care. Responsible for the planning and coordination of care, patient assessment, patient education, triage, and various other nursing interventions. Functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules in state of practice and licensure. The Sanford Professional Nursing Practice recognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as published by the American Nurses Association as the foundation of nursing care delivery and professional conduct.Department DetailsINPATIENT REHABILITATIONThe 21-bed unit is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and is focused on returning patients to their community. Patients who are admitted to the unit range in age from adolescents to older adults.Depending on the individual needs of the patient, an intensive rehabilitation treatment plan is established by an interdisciplinary team of professionals. The rehabilitation team includes physiatrists (a physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine), therapeutic recreation specialists, registered nurses, and speech, occupational and physical therapists. In the event that your patient requires another level of care, resources within the hospital are immediately availableOur patients can be admitted from any unit in the hospital, such as neurology, pulmonology, surgery, post-partum, nephrology and cardiology as well as through direct admission from external referrals. This allows the rehabilitation nurse to care for a wide variety of patient populations. In the event that your patient requires another level of care, resources within the hospital are immediately availablePatients must have medical needs requiring 24/7 inpatient nursing and the close supervision of the rehabilitation physician. The team addresses functional deficits through treatment interventions, carry-over of tasks and education. We measure success by how much our patients improve during their stay with us and by how well they are able to function once they return home. Our average patient length of stay is 14 days. Unit staff learn from, interact with and collaborate with health care professionals throughout the hospital to ensure safety and a great patient experience.ORTHOPEDICS, NEUROLOGY AND NEUROLOGY ACUTE CARE UNIT (NACU)Our 41-bed orthopedic unit is a fast-paced med-surg unit that centers around patient-focused care. The specialty of orthopedics encompasses medical, surgical, gerontology, trauma and orthopedic nursing skills, with patients ranging from adolescents to older adults.The Center for Joint Success provides early teaching and family participation in a team environment. Our orthopedic practice is one of a few in the nation with four Joint Commission Specialty Certifications in Orthopedics. These certifications reflect a practice with patient outcomes that serve as a benchmark for other units and that highly motivate staff. To ensure a safe transition to the home environment, the team makes pain management, mobility, self-care and discharge planning a primary focus. Nursing skill sets for the Ortho Neuro nurse range from medical telemetry to advanced Ortho and neuro care. The diversity and variety between the Orthopedic and Neurology worlds generates an amazing opportunity to learn about multiple disease processes and treatments as well as recognize signs and symptoms of body systems impacted by the stress of surgery.In addition, we also have an eight-bed neurology acute unit (NACU) which is an intermediate unit that transitions patients from the intensive care unit to the general unit. This unit commonly takes on new strokes, post op craniotomies, post aneurysm procedures, post thrombectomy and carotid stentings. The unit also has a Joint Commission Specialty Certification in primary stroke care with the intent of obtaining comprehensive stroke certification. Neurology encompasses patients who may have had a stroke, head injury, spinal injury or other neurologic disorders including multiple sclerosis, seizures, guillian-barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis. It also serves as a location for difficult neurosurgeries to heal before transitioning to rehab.Nursing skill opportunities include but are not limited to: CMS checks, neuro signs, telemetry reading, 3% saline drips, cardene and Cardizem drips, heparin drips, high flow oxygen, CPAP, EVD's, cast/splinting cares, mobility techniques, pain management techniques, care of external fixators, skin grafting cares and more!This unit has the distinction of working in a multidisciplinary team which includes nursing, providers, pharmacy, therapy, radiology, care management and leadership. Due to the certifications, ongoing education is provided on a monthly and yearly basis. Several research studies and trials take place within our JC certified specialties.QualificationsGraduate from an accredited nursing program required, including, but not limited to, American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). Bachelor's Degree in nursing preferred.Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
