What to expect:

The Health Educator II facilitates youth leadership and/or peer education programming that increases access to sex education to Indigenous communities in South Dakota. Fulfills leadership role within assigned team by taking on additional responsibilities such as peer mentorship, administrative tasks, and contributing to curriculum and program development. Delivers human sexuality education to diverse learners and promote reproductive health services to meet the goals of the Education Department and support the mission of Planned Parenthood North Central States, under direct supervision from the Manager of Indigenous Initiatives of Education. Health Educators are advocates in implementing our mission To affirm the right to reproductive and sexual health and freedom for all by providing excellent care, trusted education, and fierce advocacy .

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8-5pm. Occasional weekend and evening hours. During programing it will be 1 evening a week for several months, typically programming happens twice a year. Travel will be required.

Responsibilities:

This position will impact us with the following contributions:

  • Deliver existing research-based sexuality education curricula to diverse youth audiences on topics including but not limited to contraception, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS prevention, safer sex practices, puberty to diverse audiences (typically K-12) and in person, virtually or both.
  • Plan and deliver high-quality, research-based, and culturally specific programming, including content design and development, lesson planning using appropriate methodology for learning audience delivering the information in person, virtually or both.
  • Develop and sustain community and education partnerships where programming takes place.
  • Perform duties related to education programs, including but not limited to, preparing education meeting space, managing database of participant volunteer hours and peer education contracts, arranging guest speakers, developing creative teaching strategies and activities, providing mentorship to program participants, and providing transportation for program participants when necessary.
  • Adapt existing curricula to meet needs of audience(s).
  • Maintain data to support program evaluation process.
  • Participate in outreach events in the community that offer education to community members about various sexual health topics and services available through Planned Parenthood.
  • Complete internal documentation, including but not limited to timesheets, program reporting and outreach documentation within the expected timeframe.
  • Collaborate and engage with team members and partners to support continuous learning, program quality, and team efficacy
  • Deeper dive into needs analysis, adapting existing curricula, peer education programs (smaller group interventions) with learning outcomes. Creation of content, culturally specific programming.
  • Implement peer education programs, typically smaller group interventions, with specific learning outcomes articulated and validated.
  • Provide oversite for program budgets under guidance and supervision of Regional Manager.
  • Work independently, and in conjunction with supervisor, staff in CEE, other departments, and with volunteers.
  • Collect, record, and manage outreach and education program process and outcome data.
  • Participate in appropriate professional meetings and work groups to build coalitions with other community groups on educational programming; and build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Participate in appropriate departmental and agency meetings and events.
  • Dedicate time to professional skill development around Diversity Equity and Inclusion work. At least 10% of time or 4 hours per week for a 40 hour work week.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Experience working in Indigenous communities and other culturally and racially diverse populations
    • LGBTQ+ community experience
    • At least one-year experience in youth development, health education, public health, or related area
    • Familiarity with the network of organizations and agencies serving Native and Indigenous communities throughout South Dakota.
    • MS Office proficiency - ability to produce PowerPoint presentations and Word documents, and create Excel spreadsheets for data recording
    • Valid driver s license and auto insurance.
