The department has over 68 faculty and over 650 staff employees (representing 180 FTE) stationed on the Davis campus and at several off-campus locations throughout the state. Department also has responsibility for the Herbarium, PLS Field Facility, Greenhouses, IAD and HAA graduate groups, 8 Research and Information Centers and the Plant Breeding Center. Departmental missions include undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and outreach, including Cooperative Extension, in agricultural plant biology, crop and ecosystem sciences, and horticultural sciences. The department faculty is housed in seven buildings across central campus and the position manages over 40 greenhouse/head houses, numerous other field stations and special facilities used in teaching, research and outreach. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, seminars and experiential teaching, the faculty is responsible for a large number of externally funded research projects from a wide portfolio of funding sources totaling over $30M annually alongside significant endowed funds. An estimated 400+ undergraduate students FTE are taught annually; there are five undergraduate majors with a total enrollment of 255 students; there are also roughly 130+ graduate students. Provides leadership and manages the following functional areas: finance and business operations, human resources, teaching and instructional support, information technology, research and laboratory support needs, safety and liability, space use and facilities maintenance, administrative policy and procedures, development, outreach and public relations.Required Qualifications* Three years or more of increasingly responsible management experience.* Knowledge and experience in complex financial planning and budget analysis in the areas of contract and grant administration.* Human resource experience to recruit, train, evaluate, motivate, resolve problems/conflicts, conduct performance management, and build effective service-oriented, team environment.* Business management experience, manage and oversee a complex academic department in the areas of, space and facility requirements, information technology, and teaching/research laboratory needs.* Experience in analyzing complex information or problems in an objective manner and derive logical conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities, selecting appropriate courses of action for pursuit or recommendations to others, and to resolve conflicts.* Strategic planning, analytical and program evaluation skills to provide sound recommendations continually examine systems and develop or revise to accommodate change requirements.Preferred Qualifications* Knowledge of and skills to implement principles of performance management, multiculturalism and diversity, coaching skills to enhance staff contributions to department mission.Special RequirementsThis position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.EEOThe University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer advancing inclusive excellence.
