Biological Science Technician Open & closing dates: 2/25/2020 - 3/25/2020 Work schedule: Full-Time Salary: $43,683 to $62,894 per year Announcement number: ARS-S21Y--OAD Control number: Summary This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area, Integrated Cropping System Research Unit in Brookings, SD. The incumbent will support the development and management of regionally adapted oat varieties, and the quantification of benefits from integrating oat and other crops into regional cropping systems. Responsibilities * Actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, including data collection and curation, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment. * Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project, especially related to sensing or non-destructive sample collection. * Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures. * Maintains inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, seeds, and plant material. Travel Required Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position. Specialized Experience : Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: At the GS-07: Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting, maintaining, and measuring biological samples related to agronomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, or soil science. Experience includes recording, compiling, and interpreting research results and data using sensor-based, mobile, or related non-destructive technologies and validated by the destructive collection of physical samples; and associated computer systems including geographic information systems. OR Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include agronomy, plant sciences, agricultural engineering, natural resources management, soil science, ecology, or related disciplines. OR A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. At the GS-08: Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a biological science research project related to agronomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, or soil science which includes collecting, evaluating and verifying destructively and non-destructively collected soil and plant samples; operating, calibrating and modifying laboratory equipment including unmanned aircraft systems, ground-based mobile or static sensors, and data processing software including geographic information systems, image analysis, or programming languages; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process. OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include agronomy, plant sciences, agricultural engineering, natural resources management, soil science, ecology, or related disciplines. OR A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. How You Will Be Evaluated You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
